Pettigrew who was a special guest in 9th Haghighat Film Festival talked about the activity and excitement in short film festivals in an interview with 100 Sec Films Festival news center. He said most of their attendants are very young.
Pettigrew who has participated in Haghighat film festival three times noticed a lack of long-term plan as a drawback in Iranian and international short film festivals. "Iranian festivals attract excellent participants and the managers try their best to run the events properly. Still, there is a lack of long-range plans", he said.
"A dominant belief in Iran is that festivals are limited to screening days. After a festival, few attempts are made for advertisement and distribution of the movies", he added.
"Establishing contacts with international festivals and paving the way for screening the best movies in Iran and other countries are among important tasks that Iranian festival officials should take on", Pettigrew said.
Pettigrew highlighted the importance of websites and social media and said "Today lack of state support is not considered to be a threat. In fact, advertisement networks do not exclusively belong to a few people. Our filmmakers should learn about the technologies and make use of them to share their works with thousands of people".
On holding an international festival, he said "participation of foreign filmmakers and instructors is one step towards becoming international. The process is completed when specialists observe international festivals in other countries and show the movies in line with our own policies".
He also said "officials should take into account the issue of box office as well as issues regarding minor categories while making contacts with foreign festivals".
Pettigrew said he knows 100 Second Films Festival through its pavilion in the sideline of Haghighat Film Festival. "I believe this festival can help film makers who don't have access to professional equipment and lets their movies being watched. Furthermore, conveying an idea in 100 seconds needs creativity. So the festival somehow inspires and fosters creativity", he said.
